Asian DVDs

We received four Asian DVDs as a Christmas gift. They are in Chinese or Japanese with subtitles. We have:

  • A Man Called Hero
  • Treasure Hunt with Chow Yun-fat
  • Who Am I with Jackie Chan
  • Spirited Away

We’ve only watched Spirited Away, which is Japanese anime. It won many awards in Japan and has been released in the U.S. under Disney. We enjoyed it, especially picking up a little Chinese. You can listen in Japanese, Mandarin, or Cantonese and use various subtitles. Of course, we chose English.

It follows Chihiro, a sullen 10-year-old girl. She and her parents wander into a world ruled by gods, witches, and monsters; where humans are changed into animals; and a bathhouse for these creatures. Chihiro grows quite a bit through the story, as she has to take on responsibility to save herself and her parents. It will be awhile before the kidlet will be allowed to watch this, as it had some scary themes. But I enjoyed it.
